Providence Alaska Medical Center honored as top health care provider in Alaska
U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades recognize
hospital’s commitment to quality, safety
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Providence Alaska Medical Center has once again been recognized as the top health care provider in Alaska in the U.S. News & World Report 2020-21 Best Hospitals honor roll and specialty rankings and by Healthgrades in their annual health care quality ratings.
U.S. News & World Report rated the hospital as high performing in six adult specialties and two procedures and conditions. Healthgrades awarded the hospital with five-star ratings for the treatment of four conditions and performance of two surgeries. Both publications recognized Providence more than any other hospital in the state.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals analysis reviews hospitals' performance in adult and pediatric clinical specialties, procedures and conditions. Scores are based on several factors, including medical outcomes such as survival; patient experience, nurse staffing and more. Providence Alaska Medical Center was the only hospital in Alaska rated as “high-performing” in an adult specialty; here is a list of those medical specialties:
- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery;
- Geriatrics;
- Nephrology;
- Pulmonology;
- Orthopedics; and
- Urology.
The hospital was also rated as high-performing for the procedures and conditions congestive heart failure and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
Healthgrades evaluates hospitals using objective quality measures including clinical outcomes and patient safety, as well as patient experience. It’s also the leading online resource for patients to find and connect with the right doctor, hospital, or other health-care provider. The hospital was a five-star recipient from Healthgrades for the treatment/performance of:
- Respiratory Failure (six years in a row);
- Sepsis (six years in a row);
- Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries (three years in a row);
- Pneumonia (two years in a row);
- Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Bleed; and
- Back Surgery.
Additionally, 79% of patients surveyed said Providence Alaska Medical Center is a hospital they would “definitely recommend,” a number 9% higher than the national average.
