For the fifth consecutive year, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance named among World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance was named among Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals, a program that measures quality, safety, patient satisfaction and other factors in health care across 27 countries. The South Bay-based medical center was one of four Providence hospitals in Southern California to receive the recognition for 2023.

“We are honored to be included in Newsweek’s ranking of World’s Best Hospitals for the fifth year in a row. Our medical center is committed to providing our patients and community with compassionate, world class care and this designation is a testament to the tireless efforts of our physicians and caregivers to serve our community,” said Garry Olney, Providence Little Company of Mary chief executive.

Olney attributed the honor at Little Company of Mary, in part, to the collaboration between Providence’s 11 Southern California hospitals that work together in several key clinical specialties to provide outstanding patient outcomes. This work is accomplished in collaboration with Providence’s clinical institutes. This teamwork has led to innovation that ensures each patient receives the latest evidenced-based World class care and treatment.

In Los Angeles County, Providence Little Company of Mary is joined by Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, who earned the recognition for a second straight year. In Orange County, Providence Mission Hospital, with campuses in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, has been included on the list since its inception in 2019. Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton also received the designation for the third time.

The World’s Best Hospitals award, now in its fifth year, is presented by Newsweek and Statista, which developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Four data sources are used for the evaluation:

  • Hospital recommendations from Medical Experts: an international online survey sent to more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals.
  • Patient Experience: surveys of patient satisfaction with hospitalization.
  • Patient Reported Outcome Measures: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals.
  • Hospital Quality Metrics: data surrounding patient safety, hygiene measures, waiting times and quality of treatment.

In addition to receiving this latest honor, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is also a Magnet-designated hospital, an elite, national recognition for nursing excellence.

Scott Ciesielski, Little Company of Mary’s chief nursing officer, attributes this honor to the robust professional engagement of front-line nursing staff. The Shared Governance Council infrastructure, which supports the Magnet standards, is chaired by nurses who promote caregiver empowerment and autonomy over their practice and their clinical environment. Together, front-line nurses and leaders collaborate to advance professional practice and sustain excellent patient outcomes.
