Southern California Planned Giving
Jim and Kathy have been hospital volunteer messengers since 2013. During their 46-year marriage, Jim was in pharmaceutical sales while Kathy worked in financial services. Their careers required them to travel, and they were often apart. In addition to being involved with their church and other organizations, they always had a desire to do volunteer work together in retirement; doing something with a purpose that would make a difference in their community.
When he retired, Jim took advantage of a volunteer opportunity at the hospital. Before long, he was serving as a volunteer messenger two days a week. Kathy, having watched Jim come home fulfilled and energized by his shifts at the hospital, followed Jim and began volunteering in 2014. Mondays became their day of hospital service.
Their volunteer work allowed them the opportunity to be anywhere on the hospital campus during the day, delivering specimens, discharging patients, delivering flowers or newspapers and escorting visitors wherever they needed to go with a friendly smile and warm welcome.
In 2016 Kathy became ill with cancer and was treated at the hospital with world-class care in a trusting and compassionate environment. Jim continued his volunteer work to remain at Kathy’s side while she was receiving treatment. During Kathy’s treatment journey she experienced the gentlest care, and they were compelled to support the hospital by way of an extraordinary generous bequest gift in their estate plans. After a well-fought battle against cancer, Kathy passed on in 2018.
Near the end of 2020, Jim once again demonstrated his kindness and appreciation for the hospital by pledging a large gift in honor of Kathy’s memory. “We have been touched by the hospital in so many ways. This is how we can ensure that their mission continues,” said Jim. The couple’s remarkable legacy of generosity and compassion cannot be overstated. Their gift will impact the health care of the people in the community we serve for generations to come.
