Volunteering is one way to "do all the good you can"
When I think about the amazing work our caregivers do, I am often reminded of the wonderful quote by John Wesley: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, for all the people you can, as long as you ever can.”
Across Providence St. Joseph Health, I meet many inspiring caregivers who apply this attitude to every aspect of their lives. Not only are they “doing good” by serving those in need in their daily work. They also give back to the community by volunteering their time and talent to causes that make the world a better place.
It’s a common thread that ties our organization together. Our caregivers share a recognition that we are all responsible for our neighbors and that by serving others – especially those who are in a vulnerable place – we heal and enrich our own lives.
Because volunteering is such a powerful way to improve the health of our communities, and because giving back is so important to our caregivers, Providence St. Joseph Health encourages volunteerism through our program, Volunteers in Partnership, or VIP for short.
If you work for our family of organizations, I encourage you to visit our VIP website. It’s a place where you can track your volunteer service hours to earn and request donations for the not-for-profit organizations you support. You can also find volunteer opportunities that inspire you. In addition, if you are passionate about a not-for-profit that is not yet part of our VIP program, you can add it to the website and promote upcoming events or volunteer opportunities with your colleagues.
Last year, our caregivers logged 18,622 volunteer hours, supporting 305 of our community partners. This year, we hope to capture even more hours for more organizations. By supporting our community partners with volunteers, we can touch more lives and address the biggest gaps in our communities.
