Create Life-Changing Results with Providence Medical Group’s Diabetes Prevention Program

Ready to begin building health habits for life? At risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes? Ready to take preventative action? Help is on its way! Providence Medical Group is accepting applications for a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) offered virtually.

DPP, recognized by the Centers for Disease Control, is a year-long program, and proven lifestyle change that helps participants lose weight, prevent type 2 diabetes, and improve overall health. Group classes meet virtually throughout the year via Zoom.

In a six-month period, 94 participants in DPP lost a total of 1,041 pounds, an average of 10 pounds per person. Most importantly, their A1C test scores dropped to within normal range. The tests measure the average blood sugar over the past two to three months as a method of screening for type 1 and 2 diabetes.

“Our class leader taught us to make realistic goals to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes,” says one participant. “I’ve learned to read labels and choose a healthier diet, plus I’ve strengthened my muscles and learned about new food items. Because of this class, my last A1C test is no longer in the prediabetes range.”

This program is covered by Medicare for qualified individuals. Others should check with their insurance provider about covering the cost of the program (about $780 for the year).

Applications are being accepted for patients that meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Have a BMI > 25, or 23 if of Asian descent
  • Have at least one of the following:
    • Fasting blood sugar of 100-125 mg/dL (110-125 mg/dL for Medicare members)
    • Hemoglobin A1c of 5.7%-6.4%
    • History of gestational diabetes
    • Diabetes risk score > 5** (Risk test at doihaveprediabetes.org)
