Our commitment to Age-Friendly Health through 5M’s

"If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.” There’s no doubt this sentiment is shared by millions of Americans heading into their “golden” years.

Americans are living longer, according to a report published by the United States Census Bureau, which states that the average life expectancy is projected to increase from 79.7 in 2017 to 85.6 in 2060. This will impact our healthcare systems and their ability to provide reliable and safe care options during every stage of life.

Providence is taking steps to address this problem and has earned the designation as an Age-Friendly Health System. This designation was developed in partnership with the Health Research and Educational Trust, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association; the Catholic Health Association; the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; and The John A. Hartford Foundation. The initiative began with a shared goal among organizations to identify, develop, and follow a framework of best practices in caring for older adults.

Age-Friendly Health supports our mission to provide safe and effective care for the communities we serve, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

Providence is one of the few pioneering health systems in the nation that initially engaged in this movement. Age-Friendly Health supports our mission to provide safe and effective care for the communities we serve, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.  By following the 5Ms, we are demonstrating our commitment to providing outstanding, affordable services and strengthening our promise to care for the physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being of our communities through all stages of life.

Learn how the five essential elements of healthcare can improve care for older adults.
