Providence Montana honored with Practice Greenhealth national awards for environmental stewardship

Providence St. Patrick Hospital and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center continue to be recognized as national leaders in healthcare sustainability, demonstrating how environmental stewardship is deeply connected to our Mission.

St. Patrick Hospital has earned Practice Greenhealth’s Top 25 award for five consecutive years (2022–2026). This award honors performance in sustainability programs including leadership, waste, chemicals, greening the operating room, food, sustainable procurement, energy, water, climate, transportation, and green building. As Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor, this award recognizes the best of the best in health care environmental sustainability. St. Patrick Hospital has also received multiple Circle of Excellence awards, most recently in Water and Greening the OR, demonstrating depth and innovation within specific areas of practice.

Sarah Johnson, RN, Providence Montana’s Clinical Program Manager for Environmental Stewardship says, “This work is a direct expression of our Mission. Environmental stewardship reflects our commitment to responsible use of resources, stewardship of creation, and protection of human health. Strong leadership support and staff engagement ensure this work is not a separate initiative, but a shared responsibility across our Montana ministries.”

St. Joseph Medical Center has achieved Greenhealth Leader recognition, advancing in achievement over eight years.

“This honor reflects the dedication of our St. Joe’s teams to building a healthier future for the communities we serve,” says Providence St. Joseph Medical Center Emergency Management Coordinator and Environmental Steward Aaron Wilson. "We are committed to making our community healthy and clean for now and for future generations.”

These honors reflect excellence across key areas including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, safer chemicals, sustainable food and procurement, climate action, transportation, and efforts to green the operating room. Environmental stewardship is embedded into daily operations, leadership priorities, and frontline care.

This work improves patient care in real ways. Cleaner environments, more efficient systems, and thoughtful resource use translate into safer care today while protecting the health of our communities for generations to come.
