Providence Philanthropy raises $359M in fundraising in 2022, surpassing 2021 totals

Donors increased giving for programs that improve access to care, fund research, expand innovative treatments and promote health equity.

RENTON, Wash., May 17, 2023 – Providence, a not-for-profit health system serving the Western U.S., released its 2022 Philanthropy Impact report, showcasing the health system’s philanthropic initiatives and fundraising efforts across the seven states that Providence ministries and affiliates serve. Donors to Providence’s more than 40 foundations gave more than $359M in 2022—surpassing 2021’s total of $331M – and doubling fundraising results over the past five years.

In 2022, donor investments to Providence foundations were focused on areas of greatest need in their local communities, cancer, cardiology, behavioral health and neuroscience. Programs across these categories work to improve access to care, fund research, expand treatment and promote health equity.

“We are grateful to our supportive and generous community members, incredible philanthropy teams, amazing physicians, nurses and caregivers who inspire giving, and foundation and corporate partners,” said Laurie Kelley, Providence senior vice president and chief philanthropy officer. “Support for the most vulnerable in our communities has been especially essential, as Providence, like many other health systems in the last few years, has faced significant challenges and headwinds.”

Today, health care is experiencing significant challenges nationally. It’s facing impacts of inflation, a national health care labor shortage, delayed reimbursement from payors that isn’t keeping pace with costs, global supply chain disruptions and financial market weakness. Despite these headwinds, the Providence family of organizations continues to step up to meet growing community need, while strengthening the Mission.

Philanthropic efforts across the Providence family of organizations help respond to those most in need and complement Providence’s broader community investment and impact work, including its grantmaking, community benefit programs, health equity commitments, sustainability efforts, volunteerism and more.

Philanthropy is one of the many ways Providence lives out its Mission and continues a long-standing legacy of charitable, not-for-profit Catholic health care dating back to 1856. Today, philanthropy continues to power excellence in care and advance heath access by providing the latest technology, equipment, facilities and research, so Providence ministries and affiliates can deliver the same high standard of excellence to all in every community we serve, especially for those who are poor and vulnerable.

Providence’s 2022 Philanthropy Impact report shares donor impact highlights and collective efforts to make lasting, meaningful impact on thousands of lives in the communities we serve. View the full report here.
