Celebrating oncology social workers: Compassion, expertise and impact

Written by Krista Nelson, LCSW, OSW-C, FAPOS, FAOSW, ACCC Immediate Past President, and Manager, Oncology Social Work, Providence Cancer Institute & Providence St. Joseph Health

National Social Work Month is a chance to pause and recognize the incredible professionals who support individuals and families navigating some of life’s most challenging journeys. Their work may not always make the headlines, but it’s essential, transformative and deeply human.

The oncology social work team at Providence Cancer Institute meets patients where they are in their cancer experience: from pre-treatment preparation to survivorship and end-of-life support. Oncology social workers address the emotional, social and practical needs of patients, their families and care partners. They are excellent partners to multidisciplinary teams –nurses, physicians, therapists and community organizations – ensuring care is holistic, patient-centered and culturally responsive.

In addition to providing individual counseling to help patients process fear, uncertainty and grief, they:

    • Lead support groups that build connection and resilience
    • Help patients and their families navigate the complex health care system
    • Ensure patients have access to financial resources and transportation (including access to a wheelchair) to treatment sessions

What sets oncology social workers apart is their focus on human connection. They are present in moments of hope, celebration – and sometimes sorrow. They help families navigate end-of-life decisions, support caregivers facing burnout and create safe spaces for patients to express their fears and dreams. They remind us that cancer care is not just about medicine, it’s about the people behind the diagnosis.

In 2025, the Providence Cancer Institute oncology social work team noted 12,192 encounters with patients in EPIC and 731 participants in their support groups. They helped connect patients with over $200,000 in charity funding for rent, rides and medication.

As we celebrate National Social Work Month, we honor oncology social workers for their tireless commitment to patients, families and the oncology teams they support.

To every oncology social worker: Thank you for your advocacy, your compassion, your unwavering dedication and your extraordinary ability to hold space for patients and families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. You are at the heart of cancer care at Providence Cancer Institute. Today and every day, we celebrate you!
