What Is Medical Fitness?

Medical Fitness is designed to prevent or improve a wide range of health concerns through research-based fitness and wellness strategies. And as California’s only hospital with a certified Medical Fitness Center, we offer a unique level of expertise and success.

How effective is Medical Fitness?

A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine showed a 60% reduction in mortality among those attending a medical fitness facility twice a week. According to Karen Evensen, MD, who provides clinical oversight to the program, Medical Fitness fills an important gap between your doctor’s office and a typical gym. “The vast majority of hospital visits are preventable,” explains the board-certified orthopedic surgeon, who specializes in nonsurgical treatment of bone and joint issues. “We use evidence-based therapies to not only bring measurable improvement to common health issues but also help you maximize your well-being and quality of life.” While outcome-driven exercise is the foundation of Medical Fitness, we take it further—and offer one of the nation’s most comprehensive and innovative lists of therapies designed to help you live a longer, healthier life.

Meaningful movement

As the only hospital in California—and one of just two in the nation—to offer a certified Medical Fitness program, we bring unusual expertise and standard-setting best practices. Our classes and programs are designed alongside physicians and physical therapists to meet measurable outcomes, while our fitness specialists hold multiple certifications—ensuring they have the clinical knowledge to safely improve your health, no matter where you’re starting. We use a research-based curriculum and limited class size to ensure safety and personalization. While some classes target specific health issues, many are ideal for anyone new to regular exercise who wants to make steady progress without injury.
