Providence Acquires North Seattle Housing Program

Providence Health & Services purchased Booth Gardens Apartments in North Seattle from Volunteers of America. The real estate transaction closed on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017. Booth Gardens Apartments features 14 two-bedroom, and two one-bedroom supportive housing units for people with disabilities. The project was originally built in 1991 with capital and subsidies from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The City of Seattle also contributed to construction of the project.

Booth Gardens represents the seventh Providence supportive housing program in King County, Wash. and the 16th in the Providence Supportive Housing Ministry.

“Volunteers of America chose Providence as their buyer because our Mission and core values align with their goals for Booth Gardens,” said Tim Zaricznyj, Director of Housing for Providence Health & Services. “The seller also noted our reputation for quality as a deciding factor.”

The City of Seattle Office of Housing praised the sale to Providence recognizing Providence’s desire to not only preserve the affordability of Booth Gardens but also to begin a process of refinancing the project and generating capital for a substantial renovation in early 2019.

“We appreciate that Providence is preserving affordable homes for very low-income people with disabilities and look forward to working in partnership to preserve this supportive housing over the long-term,” said Steve Walker, Director of the Seattle Office of Housing.

Jennifer Bachhuber, Housing Director for Providence Vincent House, will add the Booth Gardens operation to her existing scope of responsibility. "I am excited by this opportunity to grow our Providence Supportive Housing Ministry and help ease the way of this new (to us) residential community. There is much to do and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work,” said Bachhuber.

Booth Gardens is one of 16 housing programs in the Providence Supportive Housing Ministry providing a total of 780 units of permanent affordable housing with service coordination in Washington, Oregon and California.
