As we continue to navigate the coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effect on our daily lives, it’s easy to see that we’re living through a unique period in history that will shape our life’s stories for years to come. Sharing our experiences records today's events and builds connections that will last long past the pandemic’s end. That’s where the Coronavirus Chronicles comes in.
The Coronavirus Chronicles is a storytelling and listening project sponsored by the Providence Institute of Human Caring with the help of StoryCorps, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of our current times.
In this time of social distancing, the Coronavirus Chronicles offer us a way to build community. A way to bring all of us together.
“We’re living through a historical moment,” says Ira Byock, M.D., founder and chief medical officer for the Institute for Human Caring in a fireside video chat. “We wanted to create a narrative time capsule so that all of us could capture this remarkable time in human history as well as our own lives. In this time of social distancing, the Coronavirus Chronicles offer us a way to build community. A way to bring all of us together.”
Here are some of the stories we think are worth telling. Share yours and help us add to the narrative.
All COVID, all the time
Rachel says her life is "All COVID, all the time" as she shows off her home office complete with snacks, her dog and the inevitable Zoom meeting in the background.
Easing into shelter-in-place
The day California moved from social distancing to sheltering in place was memorable for Mike Drummond. He navigated unusually light traffic and pondered the safety of continuing to surf during a pandemic. His message? "Stay safe, sanitary and sane everybody."
A social butterfly trapped in self-isolation
How can a social butterfly deal with the isolation and loneliness that accompany the restrictions brought by COVID-19? Melody talks about the adjustments she’s making to her life and the difficulty she’s had adjusting to the changes the pandemic has brought to her life. “I am a social person and get my energy and really recharge being out with people and laughing and joking and all of that. This has been a challenge for me,” she says.
