It's a new year for our graduate medical education programs

Caregivers talking in hospital

This month, more than 200 incoming residents and fellows will fill Providence graduate medical education programs across our family of organizations. With our residency programs 100% filled for the 2024-25 academic year, every caregiver should be proud to be part of the reason medical school grads choose Providence. GME programs affiliated with our ministries span six of the seven states in our footprint and provide a crucial pipeline of skilled physicians for our communities during a time when demand for doctors, particularly in primary care, is at an all-time high.

This year, over 500 interns, residents, and fellows will train in our facilities along with several hundred more visiting learners from other residencies and fellowships. Next year promises an even larger number of doctors: new internal medicine residency at St. Mary Medical Center is welcoming its first residents next summer. And last month in Spokane, we cheered on the first graduating class from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency program at St. Luke's and welcomed the first ever class of pediatric residents in partnership with Washington State University College of Medicine. This is great news for Spokane! Roughly 38% of our graduating residents across all programs stay in our communities, either with Providence or affiliated community partners. The program at St. Luke's also received accreditation to develop a first year class of interns starting in 2025.

Community partnerships are the foundation of GME at Providence, helping us create well-rounded programs that expose residents to a mixture of clinical environments and surroundings. Our residency clinics fulfill the mission of Providence by providing direct care to vulnerable population groups experiencing: racial and economic inequities related to factors such as structural and environmental barriers, social detriments of health, food insecurity, lack of access to care, inequities in mental health parity, lack of access to culturally and linguistically appropriate services, higher rates of trauma and more.

We also have strong affiliations with multiple medical schools, including hosting students and/or partnering on GME, including:

  • Meharry Medical College
  • Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Washington State University
  • Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine
  • Pacific Northwestern University of Health Sciences
  • Oregon Health and Science University
  • Western University of Health Sciences
  • University of Washington School of Medicine
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences

What's more, GME contributes to the financial health of Providence— the programs generated approximately $184 million in revenue/reimbursement in CY 2023Providence ranks among the top 100 organizations for number of programs and number of residents and fellows.* We sponsor over 50 ACGME or otherwise accredited residencies and fellowships through nine sponsoring institutions. We also partner with ateaching health center and universities to train residents in an additional dozen programs.

As we close out another incredible academic year for Providence GME, we want to extend special appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Steve Salerno, who stepped down in February from his longstanding role as Designated Institutional Official for GME in Oregon.

Dr. Salerno passed away on July 16 after a long and hard-fought battle against an agressive neu roendocrine tumor. As our DIO for Oregon, he was a strong and principled advocate for GME, for the residents in our programs, and for all of our faculty.

His colleague, Dr. Steve Freer, shared these heartfelt sentiments: "He had a strong sense of both grace and irony, a great sense of humor, and an imp

eccable commitment to doing his job with excellence, precision, and dedication. Steve cared a lot about the things that mattered: a professional ethos that stressed the primacy of the patient, and where service, and intellectual and personal integrity are the foundations of what it means to be a doctor."

Your service and contributions to Providence were immeasurable, Dr. Salerno. We'll forever miss your inspiring leadership and humanity.

*Nationally, there are 886 ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions, 13,066 residency and fellowship programs, and 158,079 active full-and part-time residents and fellows in ACGME-accredited programs. One in seven physicians in the United States is a resident or fellow.
