Celebrating Strength and Survivorship: Community Comes Together for National Cancer Survivors Day with the Humboldt Crabs
On a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Arcata Ball Park, the Humboldt community came together to honor strength, resilience and hope. Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka Cancer Center partnered with the Humboldt Crabs to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day®, creating a meaningful and uplifting tribute to cancer survivors, their families and caregivers.
Held on June 7, the special event transformed a day at the ballpark into a powerful celebration of life and community connection.
A Day Dedicated to Survivors
As the Crabs took the field, players wore pink wristbands in recognition of cancer survivors — an outward symbol of support that resonated throughout the stands. Survivors, loved ones and Providence caregivers gathered together, sharing stories, laughter and moments of reflection.
National Cancer Survivors Day, observed annually on the first Sunday in June, serves as a global Celebration of Life. It honors those who have faced cancer while also raising awareness about the ongoing need for research, resources and support.
“This day is an opportunity to celebrate survivorship while honoring those we’ve lost, supporting those newly diagnosed, and uplifting families and our entire community,” said Dr. Ellen Mahoney, medical director of the Providence St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Center.
Community, Connection and Meaning
For many in attendance, the event was about more than recognition—it was about connection. Families, survivors and care teams shared space in a relaxed, joyful environment, reinforcing the idea that no one faces cancer alone.
Events like these also reflect the strong partnerships that exist across Humboldt County. By teaming up with the Humboldt Crabs, Providence helped bring visibility to survivorship and create a space where the community could show its collective support.
“Here in Humboldt, we are honored to celebrate survivors while continuing to advocate for resources, awareness and care that supports quality of life well beyond diagnosis and treatment,” said Priscilla Lynn, director of the Providence St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Center.
Honoring the Journey Beyond Treatment
Cancer survivorship is not defined by a single moment — it is an ongoing journey that includes healing, support and continued care. The event served as a reminder that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, full and supported by a compassionate network.
Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka offers the region’s only comprehensive cancer program, providing advanced medical, surgical and radiation oncology services close to home. As an accredited program through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the Cancer Center delivers evidence-based care aligned with national standards.
Equally important is the focus on whole-person support, with services designed to meet the emotional, physical and practical needs of patients and families. These include support groups, nutrition resources, wellness programs like yoga, lodging assistance for families through Evergreen Lodge, and access to a healing environment inspired by the North Coast.
A Shared Commitment to Care
The National Cancer Survivors Day celebration highlighted what makes cancer care in Humboldt County so special: a commitment to compassion, collaboration and community.
From the stands to the field, the event was a powerful reminder that survivorship is not just about overcoming illness — it is about living fully, staying connected and continuing forward with strength.
As the crowd cheered on the Crabs and celebrated those who have faced cancer, one message stood out clearly: together, the community stands stronger.
