Breakthrough Treatment for Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Now Available in the South Bay

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is advancing neurological care with the introduction of MRI-guided focused ultrasound a groundbreaking, noninvasive treatment for essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease.

The hospital is the first and only facility in the South Bay, and one of just three in Los Angeles County, to offer this advanced technology. For patients who have not responded to medication or prefer a noninvasive alternative to traditional brain surgery, focused ultrasound offers a powerful and life-changing option.

How It Works

This outpatient procedure uses high-intensity sound waves, guided by real-time MRI imaging, to precisely target the area of the brain responsible for tremors. It’s performed while the patient is awake, allowing for real-time feedback and immediate results. Most patients experience a noticeable reduction in tremors before they even leave the treatment room.

There are no incisions, no anesthesia and no hospital stay required. Recovery is minimal, and patients typically return to normal activities within a day or two.

Who is a Candidate?

This treatment is ideal for individuals who:

  • Have essential tremor or tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease
  • Have not found relief with medication
  • Are seeking a noninvasive alternative to deep brain stimulation
  • Can lie still for 2.5 to 3 hours and undergo an MRI

A full evaluation is required to determine eligibility, including imaging and a neurological assessment.
