Paso a Paso Celebrates 25 Years of Strengthening Families in Humboldt County

Providence caregivers, community partners and local families came together on July 14 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Paso a Paso, a program that has provided culturally responsive parenting education, health support and resource navigation for Spanish-speaking families throughout Humboldt County since 2001. 

Held in the Sister's Garden at Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka, the celebration included a garden dedication, remarks from program leaders and community members, and an opportunity for families to connect and reflect on the program's lasting impact.

For 25 years, Paso a Paso has supported families by providing practical parenting education, connecting residents with health resources and helping Spanish-speaking communities navigate services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate way.

"Families in rural areas often experience isolation," said Jessica Clothier, Providence community health supervisor. "This program is about meeting families where they are culturally, linguistically and geographically and giving them practical tools to support their children."

What began as an effort to address the unique needs of Spanish-speaking families has grown into a trusted community resource that helps parents build healthy foundations for their children while fostering connection and belonging.

Through health education, care navigation and outreach, Paso a Paso helps families access services closer to home and reduces barriers to care, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

"These programs create a space where parents can learn together, share their experiences and feel less alone," Clothier said. "A sense of community is just as important as the parenting tools themselves."

The anniversary celebration highlighted the many caregivers, community partners and families who have contributed to the program's success over the past quarter century. Their dedication has helped advance Providence's Mission to serve all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable, while empowering families with the knowledge, support and resources they need to thrive.
