Leading through uncertain times

The only constant in life is change.

Herclitus was emphasizing that life is always in constant flux, you can be sure that change will happen – just as seasons change, the rhythm of our lives change.-

It is common knowledge that adolescence is a period of rapid change – in fact from ages 12-17, parents age about 20 years! To which I can attest as my oldest daughter just turned 16 last month.-

I often look to quotes for inspiration – but -does this particular quote make us feel any better about change? Or simply that change happens.

The Hopi elder prophecy teaches us not to resist change – to let go of the river's edge, that those who cling to the edge will get hurt – let go, keep your head above the water and see who is in the water with you, and celebrate.-

In other words, do not be afraid of change, embrace it!

In southern Oregon, a volcano erupted 7,700 years ago, the geologic age of the rock is estimated to be over 400,000 years. I had the fortune of visiting this sacred place this summer with my family. We were all in awe of the grandeur of this natural wonder we call Crater Lake. As we read every little display, I came across this plaque in the learning center:

Tranquility from Turbulence – The present tranquility of Crater Lake was born out of a turbulent past when the mountain erupted violently and the core of the volcano collapsed. -

Present tranquility is born out of a turbulent past. Now, I am hopeful we won't have to wait another 7,700 years to achieve tranquility. But we are called to lead through these volatile times.-

As physicians, we are looked upon to lead.

You have great influence – life has given you an opportunity to lead now, in the uncertain times in which we find ourselves. -Do not underestimate your influence. Speak out for what is right, speak up for what may be - do no be afraid.-

And when things get tough, look for the guides.

We have amazing guides that have come before us and remain with us. From Divine to earthly guides that strengthen us.

From the sacred scripture, Joshua 1:9: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. -

Do not be afraid is said over 100 times in the Bible, emphasizing trust in God’s presence and protection. Trust in Providence.-

The definition of PROVIDENCE refers to the protective care, guidance, and sustaining power of God over the universe, derived from Latin providentia (forethought or provision). In a non-theological context, it refers to the timely care, preparation, and wise, economical management of resources.

Trust in Providence. Just as our foundresses did – the Sisters had tremendous faith and deep devotion to Providence. They put their trust in Providence, their spirit was strengthened and that gave them courage to do their good works in whatever capacity they were called. They knew that they were part of something larger than themselves. I believe we too are part of something larger than ourselves, which strengthens my resolve to lead with courage.
