Miguel's journey to recovery at Providence St. Luke's Rehabilitation Medical Center

A Tri-Cities man was searching for the best place to receive care following a stroke when he discovered Providence St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Medical Center in Spokane.

One phone call with the St. Luke’s team convinced him that this was the right place for care, even though it’s two hours from his home in Richland. During his two-week inpatient stay, Miguel focused on physical, occupational and speech therapy. He did recreational activities, sometimes in a group environment.

“I came in here with a walker and I’m leaving with a cane,” Miguel said. “The care team is exceptional. That’s why I am such a fan of this facility.”

As a husband and father of three girls ranging from six to 20 years old, Miguel needs his mobility. He said the rehab team would ask if he could do something   he didn’t think he could do, but they encouraged him to try anyway and was     successful – like using the stairs.

“I feel like that mentality helped with the accelerated recovery,” Miguel said. “Their confidence instilled confidence in me.”

Miguel enjoyed his stay so much at St. Luke’s that he did not want to leave. Initially he thought he would be staying a week, and then learned it would be two weeks.

“I was thrilled because the progress you make doing those exercises is amazing,” Miguel said “I am so thankful for the St. Luke’s community. They are making a huge difference in the recovery and returning patients back to society.”

When Miguel left St. Luke’s after his stay, he said the all the caregivers, from the certified nursing assistant to the nurses to the therapists to the doctors, made him feel right at home. Miguel also said that the food was exceptional, and he appreciated the healthy options.

Miguel said he looks forward to spending time with his family and returning to his work as a computer engineer. He hopes that with time he will be able to hike mountains again.
