U.S. News & World Report names Providence Alaska Medical Center Best Regional Hospital
Alaska’s largest hospital recognized as high performing in 2 adult specialties and 10 procedures and conditions
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — U.S. News & World Report has named Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC) as the Best Regional Hospital in its 2025-2026 Best Hospitals rankings, the only hospital in Alaska to receive this honor.
PAMC was also recognized as high performing in the treatment of two adult specialties and 10 procedures and conditions, more than twice as many as any other treatment center in the state. High performing is the highest possible rating, typically achieved by less than 25% of the evaluated hospitals.
The hospital was honored as high performing in the following procedures and conditions:
⚬ Stroke
⚬ Pacemaker Implantation
⚬ Heart Arrhythmia
⚬ Heart Bypass Surgery
⚬ Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
⚬ Colon Cancer Surgery
⚬ Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
⚬ Pulmonology & Lung Surgery
⚬ Lung Cancer Surgery
⚬ Leukemia Lymphoma & Myeloma
⚬ Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy)
“At Providence Alaska Medical Center, we want Alaskans to feel confident that the care they receive here is on par with — or even exceeds — the best care available anywhere in the country,” said Kristen Solana Walkinshaw, M.D., chief medical officer of PAMC. “This recognition is both an incredible honor and affirmation of the innovation, compassion, and clinical excellence of our caregivers and physicians. It also reflects our unwavering commitment to continuous improvement and delivering the highest quality care to our patients.”
The Best Regional Hospitals are general hospitals (as opposed to specialty hospitals) that have earned a high performing rating in at least nine procedures and conditions. PAMC earned this distinction by receiving a high performing rating in the treatment of two adult specialties and 10 procedures and conditions. Across service lines and in quality measure after quality measure, the hospitals in this group collectively define excellence.
U.S. News rankings are divided into two types of evaluations: 15 specialty rankings (11 for children’s hospitals) and 22 procedure and condition ratings. The specialty rankings are for patients looking for a hospital that excels in treating more serious cases. Hospitals are ranked from 1 to 50 in each specialty. Hospitals not in the top 50 but in the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated are rated “high performing.”
Rankings in 12 specialties are primarily based on objective, publicly accessible data, such as Medicare claims, and emphasize patient outcomes, like survival rates and the rate at which patients can return home instead of requiring further care. They also consider patient experience, care-related factors like nurse staffing levels and patient services, and expert opinions from specialists surveyed over three years about hospitals they would recommend for their most critically ill patients.
The U.S. News 2025 Best Maternity Hospitals ratings were released in December 2024, where PAMC was recognized as high performing for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy).
